Problem Definition

In the context of business organizations, Information Technology (IT) refers to the application of computers and computer-based information systems to processing data and automating and informating (cf. Zuboff, 1985) work processes. Today, the role of IT in business is pervasive. In addition to cost efficiency, reliability and safety, the role of IT as the enabler and driver of business change and enterprise transformation has increased in importance. Productivity improvements through institutional change, business process engineering and managerial innovations come increasingly from IT that enhances transparency, interaction and speed.

As the value of IT comes increasingly from how technology is used to enable business, the discretionary component of work – the mental processing (Jaques, 1998) – becomes important in leading IT-driven enterprise transformation. IT management must be actively involved in integrating information technology, business strategy and organizational change management into a coherent, functional whole. The increasingly transformative role of IT calls for a new set of IT management competences and higher levels of capability.

Research Questions

  • How is enterprise transformation capability (ETC) defined and measured?
  • How is the capability of Chief Information Officer (CIO) related to the enterprise transformation capability?

Research Objectives

The research questions are addressed through the development of a framework that dissects the notion of enterprise transformation capability (ETC). Both the capability of the CIO and the ETC are analyzed against the backdrop of this framework. The assessment method for the former is pre-designed and pre-tested, while the measurement instrument for the latter (the ETC survey) is designed based on the literature review. The relationship between the two concepts is investigated in the multi-case study and reflected against the extant body of knowledge available in the literature.

Research Approach

Multiple case study including capability assessment and interviews; survey.
